8A: Solving the Problem
Problem: Paper straws in cities that have outlawed plastic straws.
No one, and I mean no one likes paper straws. Yet, every restaurant in Gainesville uses them because plastic straws have been outlawed, and if they do give them out, they can be fined. Therefore, they are forced to use paper straws. Yet, those straws get soft, wet, and simply stop working properly if they are in the liquid for too long. These restaurants continue to use and give them out, however, because they have no other option. I know lots of people who are unhappy with the paper straws, and are even avoiding using them all together.
Solution: Biodegradable straws
This solution is so easy, and even goes along with the straw movement. I would create a biodegradable straw out of plants, and other material that is actually good for the environment. Therefore, if you were to throw it away it would just go into the trash, or if someone threw it on the ground then it would go away over time, causing absolutely no hard to the environment (specifically turtles). This would make everyone happy as well. The straw would have the exact same texture as regular, plastic straws, without all the waste and hazard of a plastic straw. It would make customers happy, and restaurants even happier.

I think that this is a really good product that is very beneficial for everyone. I have seen some of these biodegradable straws at certain Starbucks, but they are not everywhere yet. I definitely do not like paper straws and I hate using them but I don't really have a choice, so I think this would be a great alternative that would still be good for the environment.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea to help more people join the movement of avoiding plastic because of the harm it does to the environment. I think I would do more research on different materials and see what wouldn't get soggy at all in drinks because that is the main problem here. I would also look into the stainless steel straws I mentioned in your last post. Restaurants could just order one big batch of these and keep reusing them. This would lower their costs while also making customers happy.
ReplyDeleteBiodegradable straws would be the best thing to happen to Gainesville. The takeover of paper straws has left customers unsatisfied even though it is helping the environment. I love your idea because it is knocking out two birds with one stone. The environment will be positively impacted, and people will be satisfied. Your post was very informative and organized with the information.
ReplyDeleteHey Danielle, I resonated strongly with your solution to make biodegradable plastic straws. I do agree that plastic straws are terrible, and are quite detrimental to the experience of buying a drink in Gainesville, only to have the straw get soggy and fall apart if I do not drink the beverage fast enough for the straw to not degrade. Great idea, and great blog post!
ReplyDeleteHey Danielle, I never really thought that a straw could frustrate me until I met the paper straw. So biodegradable straws sound like something I'd definitely be interested in. It won't be hurting the environment as plastic straws and they hopefully won't be as bad as paper straws. This is a great idea since I feel like it's something that several people can relate to. Great job!
